一 | Baghdad, Oct 13 (UNI) The Iraqi parliament on Thursday by a majority vote elected 78-year-old Abdul Latif Rashid as the country's new president, according to the voting results.
The president was elected only on the fourth attempt in eight months.
In the first round of elections at a meeting on Thursday, Rashid won 157 votes, incumbent Barham Salih — 99. 277 parliamentarians took part in the meeting. In view of the fact that neither of candidates could get two-thirds of the votes, the second round was announced.
In the second round, 269 deputies were present in the hall due to a boycott by one of the blocs. Rashid received 162 votes, Saleh - 99, state-run agency INA reported. Eight ballots were declared invalid.
Rashid is 78 years old, he was an ardent opponent of Saddam Hussein's regime, from 2003 to 2010 he headed the Ministry of Water Resources, and since 2010 he has been a senior adviser to the Iraqi president. He is married with two sons and a daughter. Rashid speaks Arabic, Kurdish and English.

二 | New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged authorities to prevent and minimise the impact of ocular trauma and to ensure appropriate standardized treatment and rehabilitation of its victims.
Ocular trauma causes about five per cent of irreversible or permanent blindness.
The Commission has observed that major contributors of eye injury are road accidents (34 per cent), sports (29 per cent) and occupations (21 per cent). However, the most reassuring fact is that eye injury is a preventable cause of blindness, a NHRC statement stated.
The Commission, among several important recommendations, has called for identification of industries having high potential of ocular trauma and other industrial accidents and make it mandatory for owners of all such industries employing minimum 50 workers to purchase personal accident cover of minimum Rs 15 lakh for each worker.
Establishment of a special fund has also been recommended to provide financial assistance to victims of ocular trauma, it stated.
Its advisory has focused on five keys areas for action by the Centre, States and UT Administrations. These include creation of a database on ocular trauma, prevention and minimization of ocular trauma, treatment of ocular trauma, development of integrated ophthalmic trauma units and rehabilitation of victims.
